about Us
History & Establishment
Established in 2012, the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya is an
independent body headquartered in Tripoli with branches in Al-Bayda and Sebha. It is
powered by 27 core volunteers and 100+ members from diverse fields, including law,
media, civil society, and public and private sectors, with strong engagement from women
and youth.
The Institution’s work focuses on the most urgent issues in the Libyan context, particularly:
- Protecting the rights of internally displaced persons and those forcibly displaced, ensuring access to justice, and providing reparations.
- Monitoring and documenting violations against human rights defenders, journalists, and vulnerable groups.
- Contributing to reform mechanisms for national legislation and aligning them with international standards, including matters related to the constitution and institution- building.
- Empowering women and youth and strengthening their participation in public life.
- Addressing irregular migration and human trafficking, along with the humanitarian protection challenges facing vulnerable groups.
- Promoting the implementation of transitional justice frameworks and mechanisms as a means of redress and reparation for victims.
- Raising awareness on the importance of national reconciliation and supporting both national and international efforts to consolidate it.
